Here’s my NYE look #2!

This outfit is more for the sophisticated holiday event with a bubbling champagne toast at midnight. Black and white jumpsuit (one of my favorite articles of clothing), White blazer, sequin heels and glittery rhinestone accessories. Again, I feel like New Years is all about the glitter and glamour. Sparkling disco balls and shiny new shoes. Bold lipstick and liquid eyeliner add to the classic sophisticated feel of this look.

Happy Holidays!I hope everyone made it happily through Christmas, or whatever wintery type holiday you celebrate, if you do. Congrats on also surviving the Mayan apocalypse! You have so much to celebrate this New Years! New years eve is a special time for me, particularly so this year so I want to share some outfit ideas with you. This first look is geared towards a nightclub or fancy house party. Skin tight black dress with a vintage blue sequin jacket. Patent leather platform heel booties, sheet metal collar and matching bracelets and let’s not forget the sunglasses. ;)New Years is one of the best times of the year to go all out. I don’t often have the opportunity to wear a ton of sequins, but New Years is the perfect time for that outrageous statement piece that you’ve just been dying to wear all year. Everyone is always taking pictures at New Years parties so look your best! Do you hair and shower yourself in glitter! Be as outrageous as you want to be this year!

I’m really into layering black on black. I think enough years have gone by since my angsty teenage gothy phase that I can wear as much black as I want without looking like I cry myself to sleep every night listening to the cure. This is working especially well since it has been so cold lately (I probably complain about the cold more in LA than I ever did when I lived back in Colorado) I can layer as many black warm things on top of each other as I want.

Zombi just turned 4 months old. He’s gotten fixed and survived giardia. He’s so smart and is learning so many tricks. Potty training is a work in progress but it is going very well. We’re at the point where we only have “accidents” when he can’t hold it long enough. He really is so very well behaved and I love him to bits. He’s still such a mama’s boy and wants nothing more than to be in my lap. I don’t know what I’ll do when he gets too big for it, he’s still only about half, MAYBE a third of the size he’s going to be. His dad was 25 lbs and his mom was 15 so we’re guessing about 20 pounds.

Clothing Swaps

Clothing Swaps are awesome. I’ve already been to two amazing ones this summer and am actually going to a third this afternoon.

For those of you who have never been to, or heard of, a clothes swap before, let me explain how they go down. A bunch of girls go through their closet and pull out everything they don’t wear/want/need/like or that doesn’t fit, meet up and exchange. You spend an fun afternoon with all your girlfriends drinking, eating, running around in your underwear* and trying on clothing.

Not only is it the perfect excuse to clean out your closet, but I also find it encourages me to get rid of things that I’ve been holding onto for forever but never actually wear. I tend to buy shoes that are amazing, but they hurt my feet (I have crazy messed up feet) so I never wear them but they are much too good to just throw out. Knowing that someone will absolutely love them and I’ll get to see her happily prancing around in them makes parting so much easier.

I had been to sample sales before I had ever been to a clothes swap and had expected the same sort of rabid, frantic atmosphere. However, it was quite the contrary and I was delighted with how gracious and kind all the ladies always are. Perhaps this is a testament to the type of company I keep. ;)

If you are thinking of hosting a clothes swap here are some helpful tips to help keep things running smoothly:

1. No boys! Especially straight ones! Girls should be free to run around in their underwear and try things on, because that’s half the fun!*
2. Only take as much as you bring. This keeps it fair. If you bring two bags, try to take only two bags.
3. Don’t bring used underwear or damaged clothing. If it is an amazing dress that is only missing a button that’s fine, but items that are beyond a basic repair shouldn’t be brought. Nylons and tights are acceptable as long as they don’t have holes.
4. Try to have as many mirrors as possible! It is no fun to have to crowd around one mirror or have to have girls running into the bathroom to see how things look.
5. Even though it should be a sort of first come first serve situation, a girl can ask to try something on even if you have already grabbed it. This keeps girls from snagging and hoarding everything and usually I find that girls will generously give the item to whoever it fits or looks best on.
6. If there is a dispute over an item you have a few options: A) Flip a coin (This is the best option, in my opinion). B) Have the other ladies decide who it fits/looks best on (this one can hurt feelings, though). C) Trade other items for it or D) Give it to whoever saw it first.
7. If you are uncomfortable running around in just your panties you can wear a slip or do what I do and wear a sports bra and some bootie shorts.
8. After the swapping is complete and all the girls have picked through everything you will probably still have a big pile of left overs. DONATE IT! There are so many thrift store that support good causes and a big piles of girls clothes are always appreciated.

All that being said, HAPPY SWAPPING!

*a note to guys: Yes, we really do get tipsy and run around in our underwear. We usually compare boob sizes, talk about sex and have pillow fights too.

NEW BLOG POST:

Summer time in LA is glorious. The nights are warm and filled with a variety of exciting happenings, but the days are so hot you’re already sweating when you wake up in the morning. Here’s a summery look I wanted to share before the hot days end: My new favorite one piece swimsuit that I recently got at a clothes swap, a pair of disco ball Steve Madden heels and matching silver Elvis shades.

NEW BLOG: LADIES IN MENS

I love menswear. I love suit jackets, bow-ties, black leather belts and matching loafers. I want to wear white button up shirts every day. Skinny ties, slacks, and tweed…

At some point I’d like to get a three piece suit. I am INFATUATED with three piece suits. You can’t wear one and not look absolutely smashing. There is one problem I often run into with men’s clothes, though…my hips. I have a narrower chest which works well for vests and blazers tailored for men, but when it comes to slacks I’m generally out of luck. The few times I’ve found slacks that fit me, they tend to be a terribly unflattering cut. I guess I really need to be willing to spend the money on a pair that are fitted for my body, as opposed to hoping that I’ll find a pair that magically fits me at a thrift store. I would also love to add a white blazer and more ties to my wardrobe. My whole closet is almost completely monochromatic, but I think if I had a variety of ties I’d be able to mix it up a bit more.

I have recently had the delightful opportunity to do several shoots with the amazing girls of Tunnel Vision.

These ladies are such an inspiration to me, with their bohemian feminist ideals and fantastic styling abilities. We stay up late drinking boba, playing dress up and taking pretty pictures. I simply could not be more pleased. I have to stop every now and again and remind myself how lucky I am to have the opportunities that I do. I’ve been in LA for less than two years and I am already working full time as a photographer with some amazing freelance work on the side. I have to work as hard as I can to continue using the time and resources I have to improve my skills and abilities and really create an outstanding portfolio. Speaking of which, I’ll be posting some of my favorite Tunnel Vision pictures on my website, so keep an eye out for those!

I’m thinking of selling some collars and clothing.

Might start an etsy shop? Where do you prefer to shop online? I could also set up a page on my website where people couple buy things and pay via paypal. Thoughts? Suggestions? Opinions?

Two of this weeks’s outfits!

Sorry I haven’t posted these sooner, but here’s some of what I’ve been wearing this week.

First Outfit:

  • White tshirt
  • Black Jeans
  • Black leather belt
  • Black leather cowboy boots

Second Outfit:

  • Loose white wife beater
  • Black pleated skirt
  • Grey Sweater
  • Black sunglasses
  • Black ballet flats

This week has been very stressful. I don’t mean to whine too much, but unfortunately my mind hasn’t been on my clothes. I’m also in desperate need of doing laundry so sadly my outfits have been pretty uninspired.

I am fortunate, though, that I have good people who love and take care of me when I’m feeling down and I’m trying to remain optimistic that things will get better. They have to, don’t they? I live in beautiful LA where magic and movies happen. I have to remind myself just how lucky I am. Things will bet better.

Last night’s outfit:

Black sheer vintage dress
Black leather waist belt
Black tights
Black heeled Dr. Marten boots
Custom made asymmetrical chain earring
Various neon party wrist bands ;)

Our last night a comic con, and what a wonderful adventure it has been!

Yesterday’s Outfit:
White knitted high collar sleeveless top
Pleated houndstooth print skirt
knitted tube socks
black leather men’s dockers
vintage black leather coach purse
Yesterday was full of adventures. I took so many pictures. I discovered some new settings on my camera that make it even more like shooting film (optical viewfinder, no focus assisting light, new tricks for manual focus) so I’m excited to keep taking pictures with it! I’ll try and post more of my own pictures to make this tumblr more of a photo diary. I have a couple rolls of film that I need to get developed as well. I don’t even remember what is on them, but that’s half the fun of film, isn’t it?
Hope everyone is having an amazing weekend!
